English Manchester United has been in contact with AirAsia, in the hopes that the Malaysia-based airline will assume the role of shirt sponsor. According to a blog entry posted by the company’s Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes last week, AirAsia was in communication with the the club, but no further details were provided. Instead, Fernandes noted that Malaysians would be proud to see the company’s logo on Manchester jerseys, and asked readers to stay tuned to the blog for more developments.

Manchester United has been seeking a new sponsor since American AIG was forced out of the spotlight due to financial difficulties. The current contract with AIG will last through to 2010.

Now faced with a sponsorship search, it comes as no surprise that the club would make contact with a company based in Malaysia. Manchester had previously indicated that the tourist hotspot would be part of its Asian tour, with a game scheduled against a Malaysian team this summer.
