MLS Houston Dynamo will not have a sponsor on the front or back of its jerseys when it starts its third season against the L.A. Galaxy on April 8 at Robertson Stadium.
"We will start the season, and we may go through a good bit of the season, without a corporate name on our jersey," said Dynamo president Oliver Luck.
The number of MLS clubs with logos on the front of its jerseys jumped to four after L.A. Galaxy and expansion club Toronto FC signed sponsor deals after the league gave its approval last fall.
More sponsorship announcements are expected as clubs finalize deals.
"We're still in discussions with a couple of companies," said Luck, who declined to name the companies involved.
Dynamo held talks with local furniture giant, Gallery Furniture, about sponsoring the club this year, but talks have faded.
According to the Wall Street Journal, L.A. Galaxy signed a five-year deal worth between USD 17 million and USD 25 million with weight-loss products giant Herbalife.
Toronto announced a multiyear partnership with Canada-based BMO Financial Group last week.
Toronto and Los Angeles joined Real Salt Lake, which has dietary supplement maker Xango as its sponsor, and the New York Red Bulls as MLS clubs that are putting corporate logos on its kits.
New York began using the Red Bull logo last year after the energy drink maker bought the MetroStars and changed the club's name to Red Bulls.
While unusual in professional sports in the United States, jersey sponsorship is common in football and other sports leagues around the world, particularly in Europe and Latin America.
Since English star midfielder David Beckham will play for the L.A. Galaxy this summer and MLS expanded its television agreements, clubs are looking to take advantage of the increased exposure at the international level.
"The high caliber of play as well as the acquisition of international players has truly raised the interest and visibility of MLS in the United States and worldwide," said Tim Leiweke, president and CEO of Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns several clubs, including the L.A. Galaxy and the Dynamo.
