German sport equipment producer Puma pushed an offer of EUR 127.5 million for five years to supply FC Barcelona with sports gear from 2008.
The offer was based upon Nike, the current provider for Barcelona, not matching or exceeding the offer.
The existing contract allows Barcelona to negotiate with other companies.
Club president Joan Laporta said Barcelona has been in negotiations to improve the conditions of the club´s equipment contract. The contract with Nike was signed in 1997, and the company paid an estimated EUR 15 million plus a participation in the merchandising to supply the club with sport equipment.
Officials from Nike and Puma did not want to comment. Laporta admitted to the negotiations.
"We have a current contract until 2008 and we are willing to fulfill it, but we are negotiating to improve the current conditions," said Laporta to El Mundo Deportivo. "We want to increase the income of the club."
Puma would pay EUR 22 million for the first season and then EUR 23.5 million, 25 million, 27 million and 30 million in the four seasons thereafter. Puma already sponsors the club's top striker, Samuel Eto´o, World Champions Italy, Guti, Buffon and Formula 1 pilot Michael Schumacher.
