The English Football Association has netted more sponsorship income than any other national governing body at this year's World Cup, with annual revenue exceeding GBP 49 million.

Deals with brands such as Nationwide, McDonald's, Pepsi, Carlsberg and Umbro added more than GBP 22 million a year for the FA ahead of its closest counterpart, the Italian FA, which brings in GBP 27.6 million a year in sponsorship. France is next with GBP 25.5 million, then Japan with GBP 16.58 million and Brazil with GBP 16.57 million.

Germany was sixth at GBP 10.4 million. Spain followed with GBP 8.7 million. Then came the United States with GBP 7.7 million and the Netherlands at GBP 7.3 million. Switzerland rounded out the top 10 with GBP 1.8 million.

Of the 20 richest players in the world based on annual income from endorsement deals, seven are English – a higher proportion than any other country.

English midfielder David Beckham tops the players’ list. He earned GBP 12.85 million last year from brands including adidas and Pepsi. Trailing far behind Beckham are Brazilian striker Ronaldo, with GBP 9.12 million and French midfielder Zinedine Zidane, who earned GBP 4.56 million.

Italian striker Christian Vieri (GBP 3.8 million) and Italian forward Alessandro del Piero (GBP 3.66 million) finished up the top five for players.
