MasterCard files complaint to block Visa WC sponsorship
World Cup 2010 - 24 April, 2006
MasterCard filed a court complaint to block a World Cup sponsorship deal between FIFA and Visa that is worth approximately USD 200 million. The complaint in the U.S. District Court in New York, which is attempting to stop Visa from sponsoring the 2010 and 2014 World Cup competitions, claimed that FIFA and MasterCard had a “contractual agreement giving MasterCard the right of first refusal to continue to be the category-exclusive sponsor of those events.”
With the deal, Visa joined Coca-Cola, Adidas, Sony and Hyundai on FIFA’s top tier of sponsors. FIFA’s other sponsors include Anheuser-Busch, Avaya, Continental, Deutsche Telekom, Emirates, Fujifilm, Gillette, McDonald's, Philips, Toshiba and Yahoo.
