This summer’s UEFA U21 Championship, to be held in Portugal, picked up its first home-based sponsor, with the country’s national postal service (CTT) signing on, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and UEFA announced.

The CTT joins international companies Carlsberg, Coca-Cola, Ford, JVC, MasterCard and McDonald’s.

UEFA chief executive officer Lars-Christer Olsson said in a statement released on uefa.com: “We had a highly successful senior national team final tournament in Portugal with UEFA EURO 2004 and now we return with the Under-21 Championship, and the stars of the future. We are therefore extremely pleased that a prestigious national company such as CTT is backing the tournament, and we count on them to help us promote the event within Portugal as well as sell match tickets for the six venues of this tournament.”

Six venues will play host to the tournament, four of which were built specifically for the 2004 European Championships. The six host cities will be Agueda, Aveiro, Barcelos, Braga, Guimaraes, and Porto. Eight countries qualified for the finals scheduled for May 23 to June 4. In Group A, Portugal, France, Serbia and Montenegro and Germany will vie for the top two spots, and advancement to the next round. Group B is comprised of Italy, Denmark, Ukraine and the Netherlands.
