Manchester City cements status in Asia with sponsorships
England - 21 November, 2007
As promised, English Manchester City looked to Asia for money, not players.
Manager Sven Goran Eriksson said he was going East to cement deals, not to gather players. That is what has happened as the club has linked up with PremierGoals to put out a Chinese-language club internet page, and made Singha Beer an official partner in return for a seven-figure sum.
The club also signed on with Chinese gaming company The9 Group, which has the licence for the game FIFA Online in China.
On the pitch, Manchester City did ally itself with Chinese Shanghai Shen Hua, Russian FC Moscow and South Africa Thanda Royal Zulu FC
It's all part of new owner Thaksin Shinawatra's plan to make the club a global brand.
