The Bundesliga club has announced plans to find further major sponsors in a bid to increase revenue and push for a regular place in Europe. Until now, automobile manufacturer Volkswagen has been the club’s lone backer with its name brandished on the club's stadium, the VW-Arena, and team shirt.
Wolfsburg board member Folker Weissgerber believes the club needs to look elsewhere for further backing. "We need to branch out with our sponsoring," he told media. "VW are sticking right behind VfL, but it would be conceivable to have somebody else like, for example, Lufthansa."
Football in Germany continues to be dominated by Bayern Munich, the club with the largest number of sponsors and highest income among all Bundesliga sides, and the only way Wolfsburg can compete with them is by raking in more money, according to Weissgerber. "Wolfsburg have got to be playing in Europe, and that is a demand from Volkswagen," he added. "Whether it be the Champions League or UEFA Cup, we have got to be achieving our goals of playing in Europe." The club missed out on a place in this season's UEFA Cup when they lost to Lens in the Intertoto Cup semi-final.
