Russian Football Union grabs US 50 million sponsorship deal

The Russian Football Union (RFU) landed a large sponsorship deal Wednesday, joining with Rosgosstrakh, the country's largest insurance company, for more than US 50 million.

"This is not just a sponsorship deal," RFU chief Vitaly Mutko said, referring to a five-year contract, worth more than US 50 million. "Rosgosstrakh also becomes our partner as we pursue our goal of further developing Russian football."

Mutko said the RFU wanted to sign a similar deal with a number of Russian companies in the near future.

Russian football enjoys the backing of several wealthy businessmen, particularly oil tycoon Roman Abramovich. The Chelsea owner was responsible for luring highly successful Dutch coach Guus Hiddink to Russia.

Mutko said Hiddink should arrive in Moscow early next week to begin as the Russian national coach after leading Australia at the World Cup. Hiddink signed a 2-1/2-year contract with the RFU in April.

The Russians, who failed to qualify for the World Cup finals, begin their preparations for the 2008 European championship with next month's friendly against Latvia before taking on Croatia Sept. 6 in their opening qualifier.
