Breweries withhold sponsorships

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
The country’s breweries are refusing to inject money into football in the country because they want Russian authorities to scrap the current limitations on beer advertising. The promotion of beer on TV is prohibited in Russia during match broadcasting and the advertising of alcoholic drinks is also illegal at sports grounds. According to Russian media, the brewers are asking Russian parliament to put an end to such obstacles. "In April 2004 we prolonged a sponsorship deal with Efes," Russian Football Union (RFU) official Viktor Gruzdev said. "It had to start to work from September 1 but the deal is suspended now as a result of the restriction." According to the newspaper, Moscow's bid to host the UEFA Champions League final in 2006 is in danger because of the conflict.
