The Spanish Primera Liga is undergoing a name change now that it has a title sponsor in Spanish bank BBVA.
The bank has been an official partner of the LFP since August 2006. Part of the agreement was a title sponsorship of the Segunda Liga second division.
For EUR 32 million a year in payments, the Primera Liga will be renamed the Liga BBVA, while the Segunda Liga becomes the Liga Adelante. It follows in the footsteps of the English Premier League, which has a title sponsor in Barclays.
The renaming will have a financial impact on all clubs. The league is expected to give EUR 750,000 annually to each first-division club, and EUR 250,000 a year for each second-division club.
