German ministry warns Real Madrid to remove Bwin logo

The match between German Eintracht Frankfurt and Spanish Real Madrid, scheduled for 12 August, is in danger of being suspended due to a sponsorship conflict with Germany.

Germany, hosts of the coming match, are enforcing a ruling made in October last year against the advertising of private betting operators within the central German state of Hesse.

Real Madrid's shirts feature Austrian online gambling provider Bwin, and have been warned by the Interior Ministry for Hesse that the logo must be removed if the match is to take place there.

More than 50,000 seats have already been sold for the game, filling out stadium capacity.

The Interior Ministry has instructed sport marketing agency Sportfive, the match organizers, not to allow Madrid to play with the Bwin logo.

Last year, German authorities imposed a EUR 100,000 fine on Italian AC Milan, also sponsored by Bwin, for playing a match with Bayern Munich with the company's logo on their shirts.
