World Cup Success doesn't guarantee fans

Despite Italy's World Cup success, attendance fell to 19,511, the ninth consecutive season drop in Italy's Serie A.

Gazzetta dello Sport did a study showing average attendances have fallen by 11,650 from the 1997-98 season when the figure was 31,161.

Renowned Juventus was demoted to the Serie B second division, and was stripped of their last two league titles after a match-fixing scandal.

That could explain the fall in Serie A attendance but it has resulted in an increase for Serie B, which is up 20.3 percent from last season.

Other factors, including crowd violence, expensive ticket prices, the impact of the match-fixing scandal, saturated television coverage and poor quality stadiums, also could play a role in the slump in Serie A attendance.

Big-city teams Genoa, Napoli, Verona and Bologna are all in Serie B while the top flight has several teams with a much smaller fan base. Last season, Empoli averaged crowds of 6,725, Chievo Verona 8,589 and Siena 9,874.

It's not a continent-wide trend, though. Spain and England, however, saw an increase in their attendance in their leagues.
