A Chinese website has announced that it will broadcast this summer’s World Cup free of charge, provided users have a high-speed Internet connection. Sohu.com Inc. and SMGBB.cn, a broadband service provider under the Shanghai Media Group (SMG), will undertake the first-of-its-kind venture in China.

The company had already secured an exclusive deal for broadband vide on-demand in the country. The site will also feature highlights, news stories and game results.

In addition, Sohu will launch mobile value-added services for the World Cup, which will enable subscribers to receive game information, time schedules and pictures via mobile phone, according to the Interfax China News Agency.

The broadband broadcasts are estimated to reach an estimated 10 million viewers, with profits made through online advertising wireless value-added business.
