Mortgage lender Northern Rock PLC will pull a World Cup-themed advertising campaign featuring England footballer Michael Owen after the star striker was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injury.
"Out of sympathy to Michael, we felt it would be inappropriate to continue with that part of our campaign," said a spokesman for Newcastle-based Northern Rock, the main sponsor of Owen's club, Newcastle United.
The campaign was based on high-profile advertisements in national newspapers featuring Owen in a Newcastle United shirt under the slogan 'One of ours over there.'
Owen was due to return home from the tournament after suffering a serious knee injury during England's 2-all draw against Sweden.
The Northern Rock spokesman declined to comment on the cost of the campaign, but said the group would suffer no financial loss as any pre-booked advertising space would be filled with alternative promotional material.
