UEFA protect its commercial rights

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
The UEFA European Championship, the third-largest sporting event in the world, has an effective marketing program that will make UEFA EURO 2008 a huge attraction for Switzerland and Austria.

UEFA has invested significant time and effort in choosing a variety of commercial partners to support such a large event, and in return, the partners can associate its name, products and services with the event.

This backing is vital to European football, not only for an organisation like UEFA EURO 2008, but so that the money generated at the event can be reinvested into the working class.

Unfortunately, the popularity of the UEFA European Championship provides an ideal opportunity for third parties to organise lucrative commercial and promotional dealings associated with the event, without making any financial contribution to the event itself.

Some of the illicit activities, such as counterfeiting, ambush marketing, and unauthorised use of tickets would damage the success and reputation of the competition.

It would also limit any guarantees that UEFA could give that its commercial partners are making a sound investment. UEFA would continue to protect the rights granted to its commercial affiliates as it has done in previous tournaments.

UEFA has developed a comprehensive and worldwide trademark registration programme, and established an international network of experts on intellectual property rights, to protect the commercial rights related to UEFA EURO 2008.
