Germany continues to lead Europe in match attendance

A combination of affordable ticket prices, new stadiums and World Cup fever are being credited for Germany once again averaging the highest attendance figures in Europe.

The German Football League (DFL) announced that 5,708, 999 fans attended 153 games before the winter break, an average of 37,314 fans per game. The figure is an increase of 7.48 percent from the previous season.

England’s Premiere League and Spain’s La Liga trail the Bundesliga with average crowds of 33,900 and 27,800, respectively. Germany’s increase in attendance is in stark contrast to falling numbers in England and Italy.

One reason given is the average ticket price in Germany is EUR 19, compared to EUR 25 in Spain and a high of EUR 44 in England. “The fan friendly ticket prices guarantee that supporters are still able to afford to see Bundesliga matches,” declared DFL spokesman Christian Pfennig.
