The Primera Liga club president Joan Laporta announced the club is due to open a football centre in the Mexican city of Monterrey in October. It will be the first establishment of its kind that the Spanish club has set up in Latin America and has been funded by an agreement with local business. “Our players have a great following in Mexico and the feeling of affection is reciprocated,” Laporta said. The Mexican links with the club date back to the fact the country happily received exiles from the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1939. The club was also saved from bankruptcy courtesy of the proceeds from their Mexican tour in 1937.
