Superliga sees rise in attendances

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Attendances at SuperLiga games in 2004-05 increased about 500,000 or 17.5% to an average of 10,789 per match. According to Manuel Mendes of leading daily newspaper ‘Público’, this increase is ‘claearly linked to the Euro 2004 euphoria’.

Other probable factors were the fact that ten of the stadia were completely new or refurbished and that 2004-05 was the most competitive season of recent years, with the league title being decided in the last minutes of the last day. New champions Benfica increased their average by more than 10,500 ( 38.2%). FC Porto, Vitória Guimarães, Sporting Braga, Boavista and Académica all increased their attendance figures thanks to new Euro 2004 stadia. Gil Vicente, from small city of Barcelos, also has a new stadium (cap: 12,500) and more than doubled its attendance figures.
