Fans of the Russian Premier Liga club Spartak Moscow have bought a record number of season tickets, over 6,000, for the current season, but it is still not enough for the club to expand the capacity of the current stadium.
Leonid Fedun, club owner and vice-president of Russia's biggest oil company, LUKOIL, had said he would consider the possibility of expanding the capacity of Spartak's new ground from the proposed 35,000 to 55,000 should the fans buy up to 20,000 season tickets.
The complex in the north of Moscow will consist of two stadiums. One would be an open-air facility with a capacity of 35,000 and would have an artificial pitch. The other, which will hold 12,000 fans, would be under cover so matches can be held there in the winter. The ground will be built in two years time.
Spartak, which is the most successful club in Russia, was founded in 1922 and has been ground sharing since its inception. The club currently plays on the Luzhnki artificial pitch along with Torpedo Moscow.
Spartak was supposed to build its own sports ground in 1939 after winning two consecutive doubles but the project was postponed due to war. In 1956, the Luzhniki was built and Spartak has used it since.
