Blackburn to cut ticket prices

In hope of stopping the continual drop in attendance, English Blackburn Rovers will pass more than GBP 1 million in savings on to the fans by cutting the cost of its average season ticket next season by more than 25 percent.

"We hope these prices will retain existing fans and also attract back those who have not been for some time," said John Williams, Blackburn's chairman.

"We have recognised the concern of fans who feel that the cost of watching live football has become too expensive."

The Premier League's new GBP 625 million overseas TV rights deal has pressured the top clubs to cut prices.

Blackburn has joined English clubs Chelsea, Everton, Bolton and Wigan in reducing or freezing ticket prices for the 2007-08 season.

Under the new pricing plan, 5,500 season tickets will be available for GBP 249, while the average price for Blackburn will decrease by 30 percent from GBP 425 to GBP 299.

The most expensive ticket will drop from GBP 595 to GBP 399.

Blackburn will also launch a "We Believe" campaign to show its commitment to fans.

"We have addressed this issue and at the same time made sure we remain competitive on the pitch," said Williams.

"Fans want to see the best players in action at Ewood Park and for the club to continue to be a force in the Premiership.

"We believe that the best way to enjoy Premiership football is watching it live in the stadium.

"We will continue to look at different ways to add extra value for season ticket holders as they are the lifeblood of the club."

Blackburn's average attendance this season has been just a little over two thirds of its stadium's capacity of 31,000.

"The players all want to play in front of full stadiums and it makes a huge difference to them," said Mark Hughes, Blackburn's manager.

"The supporters really can act as the 12th man and lift the players.

"I've been lucky enough to play in front of packed stadiums across Europe and I know the positive effect it can have, so it would be great to see Ewood packed every week next season.

"When the ground has been full for games this season against the likes of Liverpool and Bolton, the atmosphere has been amazing.

"Football is a passionate game and we want passionate supporters in Ewood Park to help inspire the team.

"Cost is an issue and we have taken the bull by the horns and reduced prices, and hopefully, this will encourage even more supporters to come to games."
