Orange interested in Ligue 1 mobile contract

French telecommunications company Orange France is interested in the new Ligue 1 mobile rights, and is ready to bid.

The company said it was not interested in television rights, and it supports the move away from three-year rights deals to four years, adding they felt five- and six-year deals were much more to the company's liking. Tender offers will be for the 2008-2009 season.

Orange France recently launched a sports station on multiple platforms, including mobile phones and TV, but was no ready to make such a large leap toward covering Ligue 1. A company spokeswoman said only 10 percent of the subscribers would be interested in football.

The league's move to longer-term contracts is designed to attract new bidders. Pay-broadcaster Canal Plus, the current TV rights holder, now controls much of the market after a merger with TPS. Canal Plus has been saying it will not match the EUR 600 million-a-year contract in place.
