A Court has rejected the compensation petition leveled against club Racing de Santander filed by 30 players who played for the club during the 2001/02 season.
The players argued that they were verbally promised a bonus for winning promotion from Segunda Division to La Liga. The players were seeking EUR 1.65 million plus a 10 percent in interest charges for the payment’s delay. The Professional Association of Spanish Footballers ruled against the players because the bonus was not accredited and there was not substantial proof to prove the claim.
However, players produced a video of a speech given in 2003 by the club’s president, Santiago Diaz, which shows him admitting that the bonuses had not been paid. The judge ruled that the source of the video was not reliable and that Diaz’s comments failed to prove that a bonus was promised.
