Due to the Naples-based anti-mafia police investigation which was opened in May, the Italian Football Federation prosecution has been eager to see Serie A club Siena handed a six-point penalty, which would see the club demoted to Serie B and possibly replaced by Perugia. The prosecution was also asking for Serie A clubs Modena and Sampdoria to be handed a similar six point penalty, while Chievo Verona could have been hit hard with the loss of nine points. However, the Italian Football Federation Disciplinary Commission has cleared Siena and Chievo from the match-fixing scandal, while other clubs involved were punished with point deduction and fines. Modena will start the new season with a five-point deduction; Sampdoria has been fined €15,000, while Pescara and Como have been fined €5,000 and €3,000, respectively. The Italian Football Federation rules prevent players or officials from taking part in any form of gambling on games, even through the official state monopoly Totocalcio.
