Dein wants to settle 'club vs country' out of court

David Dein, the new chairman of the G14 group of clubs, said that several disagreements between the clubs and the governing organisations over player release and compensation would be settled without going to court.

Dein, who is also the vice-chairman of the English Arsenal, gave his opinion while speaking at the Soccerex convention in Dubai.

English Newcastle United, Belgian Charleroi and Italian Internazionale Milano, all backed by G14, are locked in legal disputes with FIFA and its national associations concerning compensation for players injured on international duty. Only 1 percent of players are injured while on international duty.

Dein, also a member of FIFA's clubs' forum, is determined to arrive at a solution. He would like FIFA and UEFA to buy insurance for players during major tournaments and making national associations pick up the bill for friendly internationals.

He also wants to reduce the international calendar by dropping the August friendlies.

Dein said that a compromise in Newcastle's case against the FA would be good for both sides. The club is claiming GBP 20 million for the injury suffered by Michael Owen in Germany, including compensation for buying a replacement and amortisation on the player, whereas the FA's insurance contributes only GBP 50,000 of his GBP 100,000-a-week wages for the period he is injured.
