UEFA gets bankruptcy orders for online profiteers

UEFA has brought down bankruptcy orders against three individuals who were illegally streaming Champions League matches.

The UEFA website claimed the three were commercially exploiting and profiting from the matches, making the contests available to those who subscribed for a fee.

UEFA alleged copyright infringement, in particular with the UEFA Champions League music, on-screen graphics, the sponsored video sequences and the UEFA Champions League Starball.

"Last year we successfully stopped a small group of individuals from pirating our broadcasts of UEFA Champions League matches and then re-distributing them for their own gains," said UEFA General Secretary David Taylor. "Now, with the recent news that these individuals have been officially declared bankrupt, we have taken note that the process is complete."

"We will continue in the battle against the unauthorised and illegal streaming of UEFA competitions over the Internet, and I hope this will also serve as a deterrent to others who are contemplating such illegal activity. This case should be seen as an important step for rights holders everywhere."
