FIFA rules stop Swiss competition probe

A Swiss investigation into a FIFA rule mandating players be released for international duty was suspended after a judgment in a EU test case.
The case was referred to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) by a Belgian court after a dispute between Sporting Charleroi and FIFA.
The Belgian club wants EUR 615,000 in compensation from FIFA because midfielder Abdelmajid Oulmers was out for eight months after being injured playing for Morocco in November 2004.
The G-14 group of major European clubs is backing Charleroi and has also supported a similar case involving French Lyon.
Switzerland's competition commission was asked by the G-14 to determine whether FIFA is acting illegally. Switzerland is not a member of the EU, but the commission said whether it resumes its investigation depends on the verdict from the ECJ.
FIFA is working to establish an insurance plan that will compensate clubs when players are injured while with their national team. It was tested at the June 9-July 9 World Cup.
