Government to ask FIFA's help on third-party ownership issue
England - 23 July, 2007
Third-party player ownership has become a hot topic, and the British government and the Football Association want FIFA to settle some issues surrounding the practice.
"We don't want third-party ownership in British football, we want it dealt with," said a government source.
The spotlight on third-party deals was highlighted when Carlos Tevez and Javier Maschareno went to West Ham under third-party representation. That set off a big row after West Ham was fined for improper documentation, but not penalised points.
FIFA now has its hands full with the issue as it is. They will decide in the upcoming weeks if Tevez's rights are held by West Ham, or by agent Kia Joorbchian. At present, Tevez is set to be transferred to Manshester United, but finding the correct party to negotiate with has been the issue.
The Premier League wants West Ham and Manchester United to iron out the deal, leaving Joorbchian out of the loop.
