Stevens may make recommendations by Wednesday

By Wednesday, it is expected that Lord Stevens will call on the Football Association to be given more power to fight corruption.

After 10 months of investigation bungs payments during transfer deals, Stevens is expected to make a series of recommendations on regulating how players are bought and sold.

Stevens also wants the FA to make its disciplinary procedures stricter and to remove any conflicts of interest among those who rule on wrongdoings.

Stevens also wants to set up an independent clearinghouse for transfers.

Stevens and his Quest investigators examined 362 deals between 29 clubs in a two-year period from January 2004 to January 2006. He later reduced that number to 39 suspicious deals among eight clubs.

Some deals are simply missing paperwork, but some are considered to be possible breaches of FA rules, Premier League rules or both.

Stevens has again sought an extension, but, with the vast majority of clubs who are no longer implicated eager to have their names cleared, there is pressure on Richard Scudamore, the Premier League chief executive, not to grant another delay.
