Poland had two First Division clubs relegated after the Polish Football Association (PZPN) investigated bribery and match-fixing concerns.
Arka Gdynia was exiled to the Second Division next season, and must pay a USD 70,200 fine. Gornik Leczna were hurtled down to the Third Division and fined USD 80,000.
"It's an unprecedented penalty in the history of Polish football," Michal Tomczak, head of the PZPN disciplinary department, said to Reuters. "Considering the scale of the problem it sends a signal that match-fixing will not be tolerated."
Polish sports minister Tomasz Lipiec suspended the PZPN's board of administration in January because of a corruption scandal involving more than 70 officials. But he reinstated the board in March after FIFA threatened to ban the national team and Polish clubs from international competition.
The decision to relegate the two clubs comes less than a week before UEFA picks the host of the 2012 European football championship, with the Poland-Ukraine joint bid among the final three.
