Court appeal denied for former World Cup venue construction head
World Cup 2006 - 11 August, 2006
A bribery conviction against the former head of the Allianz Arena construction was upheld by a German court Wednesday.
The court denied the appeal against a 4 1/2 year jail term for Karl-Heinz Wildmoser Jr., who headed the construction of the World Cup venue in Munich .
In May 2005, Wildmoser was convicted of corruption and betrayal of confidence for his role in the construction of the EUR 286 million arena. Wildmoser was convicted of receiving illegal payments of EUR 2.8 million.
The defence argued that the trial judge had shown bias against their client and that other legal errors were made. The Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe rejected these pleas, also turning down a separate appeal by state prosecutors, who had sought a harsher sentence.
Wildmoser took payments from Austrian-owned builder Alpine for inside information about the contract bidding process. He was dismissed from the building project in 2004.
