Sheffield still looking at lawsuit

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
The English Premier League could not talk Sheffield United out of filing a suit if the club is relegated and West Ham is not.

Sheffield United is among four clubs considering legal action after the decision by an independent commission to levy a fine – instead of a points penalty – against West Ham for contract irregularities over the signing of Argentina internationals Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano.

The league has said lawsuits – being considered by Wigan, Sheffield United, Fulham and

Charlton – are "bound to fail." Still, Sheffield has said it will press on should it be relegated.

"This is not so much a case of gaining recompense as protecting our position in the hope that the Premier League will reconsider their decision and appoint a new tribunal," Sheffield United chair Kevin McCabe said. "The original ruling found West Ham guilty, but the penalty undermines the governance of the Premier League and invites anarchy. It is a snub to every club."
