An increase in TV rights revenue has not stopped French football clubs from recording a net loss of EUR 32.5 million for the 2004-05 season, a number heavily influenced by main debtor Paris St. Germain. The figures were compiled by DNCG (Direction nationale du contrôle de gestion), the body monitoring finances for French football clubs. The total deficit was accrued by the 20 clubs in France’s top division, Ligue 1.
The situation has seen marked improvement since a record deficit of EUR 151.2 million for the 2002-03 season and a net deficit of EUR 35.9 million in 2003-04. However, the improvement comes after the league signed a EUR 415 million TV rights package before the 2004-05 season, compared to the previous EUR 112 million TV deal. Half of the net deficit was incurred by Paris St. Germain, which reported a net loss of EUR 17.6 million.
