The Football League clubs paid £5.024m to agents in the last six months period, compared to £1.412m spent in the first half of 2004. Championship clubs accounted for nearly 88% of a total of paid, with Leeds United capping the list with payments of £1.6m, 35% of the total £4.4m paid by all other league clubs. Football League chairman Sir Brian Mawhinney expressed his concerns over the latest figures, claiming that “too much money is leaving football through payments to agents,” and hope that the report will lead to introduction of a regulatory framework. According to the figures, the two lower divisions (League One and League Two) were involved in a greater number of transfers or contract renewals but spent an average of £5,000 -£6,000 per deal comparers to Championship Clubs who spent an average of £30,000.
