Customs and Excise back down VAT demands from Huddersfield Town
England - 30 August, 2004
The League One club which was demanded immediate payment of VAT from sales of season tickets successfully forced the HM Customs and Excise to back down. The authorities demand the payment despite the fact that the major credit card companies have decided to withhold the money as security in case clubs fold during the season. Even though the club may not receive payments for up to a year, what left them with a cash-flow problem Customs and Excise still demanded the club to pay the VAT due on ticket sales at the time the card payment was made. Accountancy firm Mazars has argued that the club should be treated like other businesses, paying VAT only when credit card companies release payments to them, and has forced the Customs and Excise into backing down.
