UEFA is making efforts to balance the financial power among clubs, and will try to make a move to convince the Premiere League to accept a cut in their share.
Four English clubs, Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool earn a combined GBP 102 million last season, from a total of GBP 462 million allocated by UEFA.
There is a large economic gap between clubs, and UEFA believes that national leagues will become too imbalanced in the long run.
The breakdown of the GBP 102 million from Champions League television is as follows:
Manchester United: GBP 33.9 million
Chelsea: GBP 28.7 million
Liverpool: GBP 21.1 million
Arsenal: GBP 18.3 million
These figures include sponsorship funding, however direct revenue from matches or gate receipts is not included.
The lowest earner in the Champions League was Ukrainian Shakhtar Donestsk, who earned GBP 5.6 million. In comparison, Manchester United earn more than 5 times as much as the Ukraine outfit.
UEFA will be seeking support from the European Strategy Council, which is the representative body for clubs, leagues, players, and associations - to change the financial distribution. The current system is in place until 2012.
UEFA's communications director William Gaillard stated, "We will talk to the clubs and see how they feel, and try to convince them that in the longer run it is not in their interest if, because of the way money is distributed, national leagues become too imbalanced."
