The company that makes “Goleo”, the lion who landed the job as official World Cup mascot, has filed for bankruptcy.

Goleo didn’t catch the public’s imagination. So, a few weeks before the opening match, the company filed for bankruptcy.

A lot of it might be because Goleo was not the most attractive mascot. A German journalist compared the lion’s likeness to someone who had bird flu

The name Goleo stems from the old Latin term “goal” for goal and the old modern American English phrase “eo”, as in ‘Yo, what’s up?’

The think-tank said it was doubtful that the World Cup would be good for sentiment in the zone’s biggest economy, as “experiences of other countries do not suggest that economic expectations are influenced by a World Cup.

“No tangible economic impulses can be expected.”
