An increase in the Football League's spending during the first six months of the current season was reported in the latest Agents' Fees Report. It showed the League clubs paid GBP 6.2 million to agents, which was an increase of almost GBP 1.8 million compared to the same period last season.
The clubs spent money on agents in 24 percent of all player transfers, although 21 clubs did not use agents at all.
"The league's new agents' regulations, introduced this summer, have helped bring greater levels of transparency and integrity to the transfer system," said Football League chairman Lord Mawhinney.
"In making these changes we fully understood that the culture of paying agents was deeply embedded and would take time to reverse. These figures underline that reality, with clubs spending, on average, more than GBP 30,000 per day."
Mawhinney does not think the amount of money committed to agents is a new trend.
"However, change is in the air and The FA's new regulations on agents will also help to reinforce the Football League's message to its clubs," he said.
