John Comber, the treasurer for Irish eircom first-division club Athlone Town didn’t give an exact number, but he labeled the club’s losses last season as “frightening” during a speech at the club’s 117 AGM.
The club suffered the losses after making a profit in 2004, although Comber acknowledged that a profitable year was unusual. He said: “These (financial) figures are frightening.”
Comber went on to say that the club must have an annual turnover of between GBP 300,000-400,000 in order to compete in the first division. “The League has stepped up a gear,” he said. “We need to adapt very quickly if we want to stay in the league. And it’s going to become even more competitive and professional in the next few years with the introduction, we believe, of the new FAI (Irish football association) eircom League.”
