Whelan calls for salary caps in PL

Dave Whelan, the chairman of Premier League club Wigan Athletic, who also owns rugby league side Wigan Warriors, has called for a salary cap in the League. Whelan explained that football should follow the path of rugby league, a sport which has benefited greatly from a salary cap. Whelan believes that the current set-up in the rugby Super League whereby clubs are limited to spending a set amount on total wages each season would benefit football.

"Rugby league has seen the benefits of enforcing a salary cap and soccer should take note," Whelan said. "It makes sense to see a GBP25m or GBP30m limit on [Premiership] wages [per club] in order to guarantee healthy competition.”I know for a fact that the chairmen of Blackburn Rovers, West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland and Charlton Athletic - along with many more - support my views, so let's see it happen sooner rather than later."

Whelan comments come after the Premier League has set up a committee to look at the question of falling attendances (see separate report on Marketing & Rights topic).
