Real Madrid tops summer transfers spenders list

The Primera Liga club spent more than EU70m in the 2005 summer transfers window. The club managed to complete the EU27m purchase of defender Sergio Ramos from Seville just hours before the close of the transfer window. Earlier this summer, the club splashed out EU42m on transfers of Brazilian forwards Julio Baptista from fellow club Seville, and Robinho from Santos in Brazil. Other signings were Uruguayan pair Carlos Diogo and Pablo García, who joined from River Plate and Osasuna respectively. The biggest transfers income in Primera Liga has been registered by Seville, who managed to bank more than EU50m in two deals with Real Madrid. Seville president Jose Maria del Nido, who has come under attack from fans following the sale of Ramos and Baptista, justified the transfers; “We no longer have any debt and we have EU27m in the bank. The aim now is to administer the resources well. People will respect us because we don’t have any debts,” del Nido commented to media. According to information made available by the Professional Football League (LFP), the total number of new signings by Spanish teams is 485. 359 of the new signings are Spanish players, 78 are European Community countries and 48 from other countries. The LFP also takes into consideration the number of footballers who have renewed their contracts this year, like Raul at Real. Atletico Madrid and Valencia were the other two clubs most active on the transfer market, making at least five new signings each.
