Half of PL transfer spending goes abroad

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
A recent report published by Sport Business Group Deloitte showed that £140m of the £235m spent on transfers by PL clubs have been benefiting foreign clubs. Transfers spending for the 2005 summer saw about 10% increase related to the transfer spending in summer 2004 (£215m). The £286m aggregate reported spending by clubs for the both winter/summer 2005 transfer windows is moderately higher than in the previous two years (2004: £260m; 2003: £250m). However, the figure is scientifically lower than the £320m spent by the clubs in each of the 2000/01 and 2001/02 seasons. Around £50m of the amount spent on 2005 summer transfers was distributed to Football League clubs, with around dozen FL clubs benefited by at least £1m each. Transfers spending by English clubs are around double of the amounts spent in each of the Italian Serie A and Spanish Primera Liga, and around three times greater than clubs in France and Germany. The top transfer spenders for the 2005 summer have been Chelsea (£56m), Newcastle United (£38m), Liverpool (£19m) and Tottenham Hotspur (£16m). Chelsea have reported spending in respect of player acquisitions of over £300m since July 2003, which has contributed over one-third of the overall spending by Premiership clubs since that time.
