2.Bundesliga suffers transfer market stagnation

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

The difficult financial situation of most 2.Bundesliga clubs was reflected in the transfer market. The overall budget of the 18 2.Bundelsiga clubs is €157.2m, while the club invested total of only €1.5m in new players. The financial gap between the Bundesliga and the second tier has widened in recent years and most relegated clubs face serious financial difficulties if they fail to bounce straight back into the top-tier.

FC Freiburg are one of the few clubs in 2.Bundesliga not plagued by debts, but failing to survive in the Bundesliga meant they had to cut down their budget by over €10m to €14.5m, which is still the second highest figure in the league. TSV 1860 Munich are leading the pace in 2.Bundesliga with a budget of €15m. The only teams which were able to enlarge their budgets are Eintracht Braunschweig, SC Paderborn, Sportfreunde Siegen and Kickers Offenbach – who all won promotion from the Reginaliga.
