Rummenigge orders compensation for international call-ups
Germany - 15 April, 2005
Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has brought new life to the debate that FIFA and UEFA should pay compensation to those clubs who send players to international competitions such as the FIFA World Cup or the UEFA European Championships. "At World Cups the players are away for about eight weeks, but we continue to pay their wages. The World Cup in 2006 is a big money business that generates more than one billion euros and everybody apart from the clubs takes a share of that. It's a naive miscalculation and I ask FIFA and UEFA to find a solution," Rummenigge told media. The former German international believes that the world's governing football body would struggle to pay the player's wages, but feels that a substantial compensation should be made available. "I understand that FIFA doesn't want to pay Thierry Henry's wages, who is reportedly earning €150,000 per week," said Rummenigge, who proposed that the national football associations hand over 50% of what FIFA provides the clubs for the tournament. "The German FA (DFB) gives 50% to the German Football League (DFL) and they distribute the money to the clubs who send players to the tournament," explained Rummenigge, who urged other federations to follow his proposals. "We need to find a solution for all 32 World Cup starters," added the former striker.
