Celtic guaranteed more money from Champions League

With UEFA promising increased payment to Champions League participants, Scottish Celtic will be able to earn at least an extra GBP 1 million.

The club begins its Group F campaign against Manchester United at Old Trafford, and can look forward to record income of more than GBP 12 million, regardless of the performance.

UEFA estimates gross revenue at GBP 510 million from this season's tournament through television and commercial contracts, up from GBP 415 million last year. Much of that will go to the 32 competing clubs.

Celtic will receive a starting fee of GBP 1.4 million, a GBP 300,000 increase from what rival Rangers received last season.

A fee of GBP 275,000 will now be paid for each of the six matches in the group stage, adding a total of GBP 1.65 million. That is a GBP 300,000 increase from 2005-2006.

Each of the 32 clubs will earn a minimum of GBP 3.05 million for being part of a group, with improved bonuses also on offer. Every victory will earn GBP 415,000 – up from GBP 225,000 – while a draw is now worth GBP 207,500, increased from GBP 112,500.

The other significant boon for Celtic is that, like Rangers last season, they will collect the entire television pot set aside for Scotland after Hearts failed to qualify for the group phase.

The exact total will not be available until next May, but a UEFA spokesman confirmed there would be an increase, likely to be around GBP 450,000.

Every nation with a representative is allocated a portion of the GBP 187 million television fund, based on the relative value of its domestic market.

Combined gate receipts from Celtic's three home matches, plus the associated commercial and merchandising tie-ins, the total almost will be GBP 4 million, meaning the Parkhead club are looking at a figure of about GBP 12 million without scoring a point in the group.

Rangers gained more money last season by becoming the first Scottish club to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament.

That earned the club an extra GBP 1.15 million, while a GBP 1.5 million payment is now on offer to Celtic if it can repeat the feat and qualify from a group which also includes Benfica and FC Copenhagen.
