Major gaps in managers’ salaries pay

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
The salary of an football manger across the four professional divisions can vary immensely with elite managers such as Premier League club Chelsea’s Jose Mourinho earning a staggering £4.18m per year where others in lower division clubs don’t even come close. According to a survey conducted by The Independent newspaper the average wage in the premiership is £600,000, the Championship mid range salary is £200,000, and the League One has an average of £80,000 whereas the spread in League 2 ranges from nothing to £100,000 per year. However, gruelling 80 - 100 hours a week required of managers can take its toll on family life as indicated by The Independent in association with the Leagues Manager’s Association and sponsors Tissot. Apparently the vast majority of managers spend fewer than half their evening at home during the season with only two percent spending as many as five evenings a week at home. Although John Barnwell, Chief Executive of the LMA was not able to comment on confidential matters regarding salaries, he said: “In many cases, particularly lower down, they’re never as high as people commonly believe.”
