The Championship club had been in a serious disagreement with the local police over the cost of policing bills of over £300,000. Club chairman Dave Whelan refused to pay the full amount arguing that the club was being overcharged. However, a meeting between Wigan Council’s Safety Advisory Group, the police and Whelan came to a compromise solution that removes the threat of a withdrawal of the club’s safety certificate.
