Gretna might need SPL help

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
Scottish Gretna may receive a loan from that nation's Premier League to keep the club afloat.

The club has struggled financially in its first season in the top tier. The debt is topping GBP 4 million, and there are concerns that it could be the first major Scottish club to fold since 1967.

The club has risen through the Scottish football system, and had the makings of a quick riser, even qualifying for the UEFA Cup. But when owner Brooks Mileson came down with a serious brain illness, the club has run into trouble. He is the only one who can authorise payment, which is a problem for the club's debts and players' salaries.

SPL secretary Ian Blair said the governing body would help Gretna survive until at least the end of the season.

But crowds have been sparse, and the club has been ground-sharing with Motherwell to meet SPL stadium criteria.

Results against Gretna would be erased from the record book this season if the team folded before the season's end. The table would have to be reset if Gretna pulled out. Wins, defeats and draws against the club would be annulled.
