There is more incentive than pride for German player to win the 2008 European Championships.

The players will get a EUR 250,000 bonus per player if they win the whole tournament. The players and federation met and came up with the bonus plan.

Each player will receive EUR 50,000 if they advance beyond the first phase. That goes to EUR 100,000 for a trip to the semifinals, and EUR 150,000 if they fall in the final. The rate goes up with a win in the final.

Despite a storied history, Germany has struggled of late in the tournament, bowing out in the first round in 2000 and 2004.

Germany has won the tournament three times, including 1972 and 1980 as West Germany. A unified nation won in 1996.
