The Football League is to make a contribution of GBP 70,000 to this year’s BBC Children in Need Appeal, through a GBP 1 donation from each ticket sold for February’s Carling Cup Final - a gesture made possible by the co-operation and support of the Premier League.
The money raised will be presented, personally, to BBC Children in Need host Sir Terry Wogan by Football League Chairman Lord Mawhinney, prior to kick-off.
This new donation further underlines The League’s ongoing support for the BBC Children in Need Appeal following the previous auctioning of ‘money can’t buy’ packages on BBC Radio 2 for each of the last three Carling Cup Finals - offering the opportunity to join League Chairman Lord Mawhinney, on-pitch, for the formal presentation to the two teams.
In announcing The League’s new GBP 70,000 donation to BBC Children in Need Football League Chairman Lord Mawhinney said: “Having already raised some GBP 30,000 for BBC Children in Need over the last three seasons we have now taken this further opportunity to use the power of football to change even more children’s lives.
“We would like to thank Premier League Chief Executive Richard Scudamore for helping us to make this happen and also, in advance, both finalist clubs.”
Sir Terry Wogan, added: “The Football League have been among our greatest supporters for many years. Yet again, they’ve scored for BBC Children in Need.”
As well as making a financial contribution to BBC Children in Need Football League clubs are offering free tickets to League matches to young football fans throughout the country. In total, there will be free tickets available at more than 800 matches during the 2006/07 season as part of The League’s ‘Fans of the Future’ initiative.
The Football League recognises the responsibilities of being a brewer of alcoholic drinks prevents Carling, the competition sponsors from having any involvement with activity linked to children, including this gesture.
Carling's continued integrity and responsibility makes them a valued partner to The Football League and although they are not able to be involved with this donation from ticket revenues, innovations such as making their entire corporate ticket allocation exclusively available to fans help make the Carling Cup Final a successful event.
